People always notice everything that is different, but for parents the hardest thing is to accept the fact that their child is different. When Mădălin was born, in the early days it was very difficult for his mother to accept the fact that her little boy was born with Down syndrome. After moments of panic and acceptance, moments of joy followed. The first smile was a ray of sunshine for Mădălin’s mother, then other moments of joy followed.

It is very exhausting to go through the evaluation process and then through the long therapy process and the various treatment methods. When you are exposed to these experiences, you need a little hope and Madalin’s story is the story that can encourage a parent who just found out that his baby is different from the others.

Therapy sessions should be continued every day, any interruption can diminish even a significant progress. It takes patience because a child’s soul is sensitive and fragile.  He, like his mother, must be constantly encouraged, must feel the joy of success, and must be praised for any progress, however small it may seem.

Today Madalin has made great progress. And all this was possible, first of all because Mădălin’s mother did not lose hope!

“Having a brother like you means a lot to me. Happy Birthday to you, little love!! Happy birthday to all the kids with Down syndrome! You are the most wonderful and loving children on Earth!

Down syndrome is literally one of the most beautiful things in my life. My brother is funny, extraordinary, kind, full of love and who invites you to embrace. People with Down syndrome are fantastic teachers. Down syndrome is not a disease, it is not, it is not even a disability. Just because you read a little slower or you can’t run as fast as others doesn’t mean you have a disability. I learned these things from Madalin. I love you the most in this world, my dear.

These are the thoughts of Alexandra, Mădălin’s sister, on the occasion of the International Day of Down Syndrome.
